A STUDY ON MRS. ERLYNNE’S SACRIFICE IN OSCAR WILDE’S DRAMA “LADY WINDERMERE‘S FAN”

Literature is an expression of human experience through their imagination. Whenever, they talk about written literature directly deal with thought and feeling. One of written arts, is drama. Drama is a work of literature or composition which delineates life and human activity by means of presenting various actions and dialogues between a group of character. The writer of this thesis is interested in Oscar Wilde’s drama “Lady Windermere’s fan” because it is one of the best classical drama that presents the social reality that happen at that time. She analyzes the sacrifice that is done by the main character (Mrs. Erlynne). The purposes of the study are to describe what are Mrs. Erlynne’s sacrifices, to know why the main character (Mrs. Erlyne) sacrifices, and to find out the way of Mrs. Erlynne sacrifices on Oscar Wilde’s drama “Lady Windermere’s fan”. The study applies descriptive qualitative method which is used to review literary research to provide research data. Dealing with the study, the writer of this thesis uses objective approach. The object of the study is the play “Lady Windermere’s fan” in Oscar Wilde’s drama. The data are taken from the whole events in the play that related with the point of discussion that is main character’s sacrifice point. The result of the study shows that, Mrs. Erlynne sacrifice are: first, admitting to take the fan. Second, living without childe. Mrs. Erlynne sacrifices because she wants to save Lady Windermere’s family life, her reputation and also get back to her society. Then, the way to sacrifice are persuading Lady Windermere to return to her husband, keeping secret her identity and come to Lady Windermere’s party
